WW First Annual Buddy Expo
The Walt Whitman Buddy Expo, held on March 7th, was a vibrant celebration of the year-long partnership between fifth grade and kindergarten students through the "Buddy Program." This mentorship initiative paired older students with younger ones, fostering guidance, support, and empathy. The Expo, remarkably, was entirely student-led, showcasing their collaborative efforts in designing, creating, promoting, and setting up the event. Rotating stations within the gym offered diverse activities, including a Reading Nook, Math Games, Social-Emotional Activities, STEM Challenges, Literacy Games, and Ozobot Coding, providing a fun and engaging learning experience for all. This event highlighted the leadership development fostered at Walt Whitman, where fifth graders cultivate empathy and responsibility by mentoring their kindergarten buddies. Through planning and organizing the Expo, and engaging in activities focused on literacy, STEM, and social-emotional learning, students demonstrated that true leadership is about inspiring and supporting others, ultimately building a strong and connected school community.
