Walt Whitman Elementary Celebrates a Journey Across North America for International Day

Walt Whitman Elementary Celebrates a Journey Across North America for International Day

The gymnasium of Walt Whitman Elementary School were transformed into a vibrant map of discovery this week as the PTA hosted its highly anticipated International Day. This year’s curriculum took students on an immersive expedition across the continent of North America, exploring the vast diversity of its landscapes, people, and traditions. From the icy reaches of the Arctic to the sun-drenched shores of the Caribbean, students moved through interactive regional hubs designed to showcase the unique spirit of our continent.

The PTA meticulously curated stations that highlighted the distinct climates, wildlife, and cultures of North America’s most iconic regions. Students began their journey in the Far North, the Arctic, and Greenland, where they learned how life thrives in extreme cold among ice sheets and polar bears. From there, they traveled to the Pacific West to marvel at towering redwoods and the American Southwest to study the rugged geology of the desert. The exploration continued through the Great Plains and Prairies, the Eastern Forest and Appalachians, and down to the Tropical, Coastal, and Caribbean zones. A special focus was also placed on the Ancestral Lands of Mesoamerica, where children delved into the rich history and architectural feats of ancestral civilizations set against lush rainforest backdrops.

At every stop, the learning experience was multi-dimensional, going far beyond simple geography. Students explored the specific climates and national parks that define these areas, while also identifying the unique wildlife that calls each ecosystem home. By integrating lessons on local culture, the PTA helped students celebrate the  traditions that make the North American mosaic so rich.

We look forward to seeing where our continental journey takes us next year.
